Forgotten Harvest is dedicated to relieving hunger in Metro Detroit and preventing nutritious food waste. Formed in 1990 to fight hunger and waste, Forgotten Harvest “rescued” over 45 million pounds of food in 2016 by collecting surplus prepared and perishable food from 800 sources, including grocery stores, fruit and vegetable markets, restaurants, caterers, dairies, farmers, and wholesale food distributors. The donated food, which would otherwise go to waste, is delivered free-of-charge to 250 emergency food providers – food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless and domestic shelters, children’s homes, senior centers and group homes – in the Metro Detroit area. Forgotten Harvest covers 2,000 square miles in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties to feed hungry people.
